Trainwreck

I’m not a big romantic comedy fan, particularly if part of the humor is the heroine humiliating herself as she tries to get the hero.   It was a relief to find that Trainwreck was not going to be that sort of film.  Amy, played by Amy Schumer, is a commitment phoebe career women, who does not believe in monogamy or love.

As her boss says of Amy.

“I like you, Amy. You’re clever but you’re not too brainy. You’re prettyish but you’re not too gorgeous. You’re approachable. “

The diary of a teenage girl

I really wanted to like this film, and to be fair there was a lot to like. Bel Powley’s portrayal of the teenage Minnie is compelling with its mix of vulnerability and strength.  Minnie is a budding cartoonist, her illustrations lift the often uncomfortable and dark undertones.  We are at times down the rabbit hole with their mixture of surreal fairy-tale, hallucination and naive sexual honesty.  Applause have to be also handed to the other main players in this drama.  Alexander Skarsgård brings a charm and charisma to Monroe despite his actions.    Kristen Wiig  plays Minne’s often self absorbed mother with a narcissistic flair.   Credit also has to be given to the the 70s back drop,  that does a lot to skirt  the moral ambiguity of the films main narrative.
