This one’s already been out a little while, and like many others I suspect, it was not at the top of my must watch list. That is a shame because this a very likeable movie with all the elements you would expect from the Marvel stable. Armed with a super-suit and the ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, cat burglar Scott Lang is our hero Ant Man, supported by his new mentor Dr. Hank Pym, played by Kurt Russel. Past experience with shrinking heroes has not always been good. The effects are often annoying and feel a little dated. However, in this outing it appears that this hero can hold his head up high, whether full size or shrunk down.
A wise cracking supporting cast also charm the audience, picking up many of the best one liners. As our villain Darren Cross, Corey Stoll sports that Lex Luther style shiny dome and sharp suit, with appropriate panache, he manages to revel in his evil plot without straying too far into the realm of caricature bond villain. We also have a strong female lead played by Evangeline Lilly. With her Sharpe bob haircut and martial arts moves, Lilly takes on our hero and acts as a sceptical trainer, as he learns to master the technology of his Ant Man suit. There is chemistry between the two, but the potential romance is down played and only hinted at towards the end on the movie.
The tried and true heist formula also works. This is not an overly complicated plot and may be another reason why it is refreshing. Recent Marvel movies have had more twists and turns than your average labyrinth. For those sceptic Marvel fans give Ant Man a chance. You won’t be disappointed.
PS: Don’t forget to stay till the end of the credits for the teaser clip.
